Inexistent Books
Inexistent Books wants to question the invisible in times of hypervisibility, embrace the paradox and explore the utopian potentials of the anti-medium. We have asked artists for Inexistent Books – artists’ publications that did not exist before, have been idle, deal with non-existence or refuse to exist. The ephemeral bookstore at Schaulager is curated by Jan Steinbach and for 4 days shows publications by Bia Bittencourt, Cassie Thornton, Christiane Blattmann, Claudia De La Torre, Elisabeth Tonnard, Fiona Banner, Florence Jung, H.P. Blavatsky & Sun Ra, Hammann von Mier, Jenny Rova, Kasper Andreasen, Lars Dyrendom, Lisa Mühleisen, Martijn in ’t Veld, Nusserglazova, Sara MacKillop, Slow Reading Club, Sophie Nys, Stefano Calligaro, Studio for Propositional Cinema, Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson, Thomas Geiger, Villa Design Group, and Yoshinori Niwa.

transformative figures
curated by Quirin Brunnmeier
One of the strengths of moving images is that they make processes of change comprehensible. Social changes, cultural changes and changes in nature. The selected contributions can be seen from this heterogeneous perspective. They create a broad yet sharp view of different forms of transformation.

silvopasture works
curated by Anna-Sophie Springer (K. Verlag, Berlin)
Convening artists from all over the world, this screening is inspired by the practice of silvopasture. Silvopasture is an integrated, holistic approach to agriculture and forestry that allows all types of organisms involved to benefit in mutual ways, forming a balance that supports and co-nourishes each participant across various scales. A tradition of living-with familiar to Indigenous communities on all continents, silvopasture is an act of resistance and sustenance that understands planetary life as compositional and collective.

As a complementary approach, silvoculture resonates with independent publishing as a dynamic and collaborative practice nurtured by reciprocity, multiplication, and (re-)distribution; gathering and cultivating ecologies of careful attention, knowing, and sensing on varying scales, from the smallness of a single letter, word, or image to bigger assemblages like the book, a visual sequence, a print-run, a group of positions and voices, a shelf, a book fair, or the world.

In this spirit, the pieces shared by comrades in silvopasture works address survival and disappearance from many different vantage points, some using a more documentary approach, while others offer more poetic interventions. Together, the works in print, video, and photography suggest repertoires of interdependence in both love and struggle.

With contributions by
Elisa Balmaceda, Rosa Barba, Priyanka Basu & Steve Rowell, Carolina Borrero Arias, Dora García, Ana Hupe, Geraldine Juárez, Armin Linke, Hanna Mattes, Martina Pozzan, Ela Spalding, Joel Tauber, Raul Walch, Tania Willard

Yes, and the body has a memory
curated by Fabian Schöneich

"How to care for the injured body,

the kind of body that can’t hold
the content it is living?

And where is the safest place when that place
must be someplace other than in the body?“
(Claudia Rankine, Citizen: An American Lyric, 2014)

In Julia Phillips' Shake (A Choreography for Flying Hair) (2013) the artist swings her head in such specific moves that it is implied that she has long hair. The movement creates an image of hair that has nothing in common with the artist's appearance. And it is precisely through the absence of long hair that she emphasizes the cliché of ideals of beauty. Right in between, between actual appearance and imagination, Phillips expresses the racial discrimination of Black people on the basis of their hair.

Motlhaba Wa Re Ke Namile (2016) refers to the slave mask that was used in Lerato Shadi's home village Lotlhakane in Mahikeng, South Africa, to prevent slaves from killing themselves by ingesting soil until they suffocated. The knowledge about this act of resistance has been lost over the years, Shadi brings it back to our memories and builds a bridge to questions of belonging and displacement.

Black Girl as a Landscape (2010) by Sondra Perry, which is both abstract and figurative. It articulates Perry's specific interest in the possibility of abstraction as a means of creating dimensionality and autonomy for marginalized bodies.

Over the course of a public zoom conference, they will discuss their experiences organizing art book fairs; from the contextual challenges and visionary ideas for solutions; to the need for solidarity and the digital imperative; and for a sustainable communication of critical ideas in times of Corona.

15:00 David Horvitz: Wiemer Büecher chlaut / How to shoplift books published by Edition Taube. Reading with Carlo Spiller and Cassidy Toner

Workshops

Thursday

Tyrolean dumplings are called Knödel, they are very round and come in millions of varieties - most of them are super delicious. Thats why we are very happy to announce that Lukas Marsoner and Johannes Willi from Küche der Dilettanten will invite you to the first ever Knödel thursday. The knödel dish will be combined with a very special cheese from Southtyrol called grey cheese and wild plants/herbs foraged in the wild around Basel by Eli`s Wildplants.

Saturday

12:00 – 15:30 Paper Paper | Olivier Rossel | Workshop
Der Workshop untersucht Bücher, Zines, Gedrucktes, Publikationen und deren Materialität. Aufgelegtes von der I Never Read Art Book Fair wird in seine Einzelteile zerlegt. Dazu gibts Minzentee.

16:30 – 18:30 A Book A Day | Tine Melzer | Text Workshop
A Book A Day is a shared book project in collaboration with the artist and researcher Tine Melzer. The workshop starts with an introduction on bookmaking as artistic practice, self-publishing and authorship based on selected projects and methods used by Tine Melzer. A book can be considered an utterance, a speech act or an autonomous object of language. Language is a shared practice. A few exercises will show phenomena of language-games. The group collaborates on a conceptual book project, which will be produced in a limited edition of a hardcover artist book. Each participant can purchase a copy received 4 weeks after the workshop. No preparatory knowledge is needed, a certain lust for language and image helps.
Tine Melzer works as an artist and researcher with a focus on language and holds a PhD from the University of Plymouth, UK. Rollo Press recently published Taxidermy for Language-Animals: A Book on Stuffed Words by Tine Melzer. She teaches at the HKB University of the Arts, Bern. Registration: mail@ineverread.com max. 10 participants

I Never Read, Art Book Fair Basel.

A French gentleman who possessed a large personal library was asked a too-familiar question by a visitor to his home. A question so often posed to those who own a lot of books – “And have you read them all?” The wise collector faced his visitor with an astonished look and replied: “No, and I haven’t drunk all the wine in my cellar either.”

About:
I Never Read, Art Book Fair Basel is a platform for artistic perspectives in the form of books. The event brings together national and international publishers, artists, authors and designers who choose the book as their instrument for art production. For all and by all, it is an open and convivial place for discoveries, critical thinking, exchange, discussions, and hospitality.

I Never Read, OOO is the magazine that serves as a medium to bridge the time between fairs. It is both: digital and physical, crystal clear, blurry and wild, and takes numerous shapes and forms to stimulate a democratic and liberal discourse in our society.
